Biography
If you had asked Paula Almquist what she wanted to be when she grew up when she was a small child, she would have answered: "artist." Back then, her fondness for the visual arts was quite evident and, remarkably, she was creating three-dimensional shapes with crayons, pencils, and markers. Most of her peers could only draw "stick figures." As a grown adult, she focuses on graphic design, realism, and creating images reflecting the beauty of the natural world. Her portfolio is diverse and extensive. Notably, she has received some requests to do pet portraits and her body of work includes exceptional pet portraits. She lives in sunny Southern California with her parents, Robert and Ruth, as well as her brother, Joe, along with a tortoiseshell cat and several Miniature Dachshunds. She likes to spend some weekends volunteering at the Oceanside Museum of Art, in Oceanside, CA. Paula has been described as a "cat lover" and an "introvert at heart."

What is Scratchboard Art?
Scratchboard art is artwork that was made using the scratchboard medium. A scratchboard is simply a black board with a white layer underneath it. Scratching into the board will reveal some of the white layer. Scratchboard is an old medium, and has been used by artists to create intricately detailed illustration imagery.
